    AboutPonte Rialto

    The Bridge of Rialto

The restaurant is named after the Ponte di Rialto in Venice, Italy, which literally means Bridge of Rialto. It was designed by Antonio da Ponte, and was completed in 1591.

The original bridge was a floating bridge called the Ponte della Monetta, built in 1181. It was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1255 due to increasing traffic to and from the Rialto Market on the eastern bank of the Grand Canal. The wooden bridge was partially burned during the revolt in 1310. In 1444, it collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade and collapsed again in 1524. This necessitated the construction of a stone bridge, and Antonio da Ponte’s design was chosen amongst designs by prominent architects of that time. It is said that Michelangelo was considered to design the bridge as well. The engineering of the bridge was so bold for its time that architects predicted it would not last, but it has survived to become one of the architectural icons of Venice.
